Brick Cap Mushroom Hypholoma Sublateritium Cluster

Brick Cap Mushroom Hypholoma Sublateritium Cluster

Hiking along Jonathan Run Trail in late October I came across this interesting specimen growing out of a dead log just below a Jonathan Run waterfall. Brick Cap mushrooms, Hypholoma Sublateritium, typically grow in autumn. Fungi are difficult to identify and it took me a while surfing the web to find a close match for this mushroom. The woodlands of Ohiopyle State Park is a botanical treasure containing many unique plants and organisms not commonly found in other areas of western Pennsylvania.
