After Sunset at White Sands National Monument

After Sunset at White Sands National Monument

A long exposure of a fading New Mexico sunset over the world's largest field of white gypsum sand dunes found in the bottom of the Tularosa Basin near Alamogordo. This unique field that has an eerie appearance of snow is the result of eroding rock in the surrounding mountains being collected here without an outlet to the ocean. In the far distance you can see the Organ Mountains with the closer San Andres Mountains looking to be just beyond the dunes. Unfortunately, most of gypsum field is off limits as part of a military missile range.
