Falcon Cliffs of Tuscarora Sandstone on North Fork Mountain
Falcon Cliffs can be seen in this photograph dwarfing full size trees along the western summit of North Fork Mountain with the distant Allegheny Front (and Dolly Sods) in the background. The resistant Tuscarora Sandstone of the cliffs faces into the strong westerlies that often blow with gale force winds while only a short distance away from the leading edge of the mountain the winds can be calm as occurred the day I hiked up to this scene. Allegheny Front, or Mountain as its also called, in the background is actually considerably higher than North Fork despite the appearance in this picture. The line of cliffs goes for many miles all along the summit of North Fork.
