Carr Mountain of the Sierra Ancha Range
Looking past a Juniper Tree towards the tall exposed cliffs and slopes of scree (broken rock fragments) of Carr Mountain (almost 7700 feet in elevation) in the Sierra Ancha Range north of Globe, Arizona. Above Carr Mountain can be seen a wall of Pine forest covering the higher elevations of the mountains as they enjoy 60 inches of rain per year compared to the desert a few miles west that only receives about 8 inches. Hiking in the pine forest here I saw both bear and mountain lion tracks in the soft sandy soil along a creek bed. These mountains are said to have the highest concentration of black bear in the state of Arizona.
